In this episode, in conversation with Tiago Mota Saraiva, we discuss the work of ateliermob and Working with the 99% and together explore the transforming role of an architecture studio amidst economic and democratic crises
Through their work they continuously and explicitly push the boundaries of architecture, rejecting any of the boxes the discipline is trying to fit them in. Moving beyond their acclaimed community kitchen in Teras da Costa, they reject the aestheticization of informality and call for the architect’s entanglement in the political and legal spheres. These new modes of engagement and action, supporting communities in their spatial claims, chart a new course for architecture in times when the future appears hopeless.
Ateliermob is a multidisciplinary platform for the development of ideas , research and projects in the areas of architecture, city and territory, founded in 2005 in Lisbon by Andreia Salavessa and Tiago Mota Saraiva. In 2016 and following several projects initiated from within ateliermob, the cooperative Working with the 99% - was established. Working with the 99% is a non-profit organisation focusing on spatial and social interventions, on the development of participatory and cooperative processes, on design and production of public policies, and strategic development.
Both ateliermob and Working with the 99% have a shared ethos of recognising that social and political engagement is inherent to architecture, that design can never remain neutral but always holds social responsibility.
